(NAPLES, FL September 22, 2010) – As Americans across the country are getting ready to mark the National Family Health and Fitness Day on September 25th , a local boot camp owner stresses the importance of regular exercise for people of all ages.
"This event is a great opportunity to remind everyone of the many lasting benefits of regular exercise, but people should realize that in order to get the most out of their regimen, they should make fitness part of their daily lives," says Natalie Lahnan, CPT, owner and trainer at Naples/Marco Island Adventure Boot Camp for Women. "Working out when there is a national initiative like this one and then not doing anything for the rest of the year will not bring the desired results."
Lahnan points out many compelling reasons why people should exercise - if possible every day but certainly no less than three times a week. "There are so many studies showing that lack of physical exercise can lead to a host of serious medical conditions," she says. "For example, it’s a well-documented fact that inactive people are twice as likely to have heart disease and also an increased risk of diabetes and other illnesses."
Therefore, the question many fitness professionals like Lahnan face is how to keep people motivated to start and continue exercising once events that promote physical fitness, such as the National Family Health and Fitness Day, are over.
Lahnan believes that if people keep remembering why they should exercise, they will not lose sight of their goals. "Practically all the body systems and organs will benefit from a good workout," she says. "If you have high blood pressure or cholesterol, you will lower them with diet and exercise. If you are depressed or feel tired all the time, exercise will help. You might say exercise is good for you from head to toe!"
Boot camps like Lahnan’s have proven to be very effective not only in providing the right mix of strength, cardio, agility, balance, flexibility and interval training, but also in making the workouts interesting so that clients are motivated to continue exercising. "We call it an exercise ‘routine’ but in fact there is nothing even remotely routine about it," she says. "We vary the workouts so each time there is a new and exciting element to it."
In her boot camp, Lahnan has seen many examples of people of all ages who have lost weight, shaped up, and improved their overall health by sticking to a regular workout routine.
"People tell me their doctor recommended that they start exercising to lose weight, lower their blood pressure or cholesterol level, or to strengthen their bones, joints, and muscles," she says. "The progress they make is truly incredible and very inspiring, but that’s because they keep at it. Fitness is a way of life for them."
