(NAPLES, FL November 15, 2010) --As 2010 is coming to an end and the New Year is just around the corner, curious minds want to know what will be the most popular exercise trends in 2011.
According to the latest survey by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the largest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world, fitness boot camps will continue to muscle their way into the top 20 spots of the most popular workouts.
“This finding is not at all surprising,” comments Natalie Lahnan, CPT, owner of Naples/Marco Island Adventure Boot Camp for Women. “Time and again, we have seen the big difference fitness boot camps make, as well as truly spectacular results they produce.”
The survey, based on an online poll of over 2,000 fitness and health professionals from Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa, as well as North and South America, is published in the November / December issue of ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal.
The American Council on Exercise (ACE), the nation’s leading authority on fitness, has also rated boot camps among the top exercise trends.
One of the reasons for boot camps’ continuing popularity is that they focus on the whole body health and fitness rather than concentrating just on a single area, Lahnan explains.
“This kind of workout incorporates cardiovascular, strength, endurance and flexibility training,” she says. “Whatever your fitness goal – weight loss, tighter abs, improved immunity, higher energy level, stronger bones, joints and muscles – boot camp routines can accomplish all that.”
The benefits of regular, all-body workouts are even more far-reaching, Lahnan notes. “Exercise has a proven track record of preventing or improving the symptoms of various physical and mental conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, certain forms of cancer, and depression,” she says. “Whatever ails you, chances are that continued physical activity along with a healthy lifestyle will help you get healthier and live longer.”
But that’s not all: Since boot camp workouts are varied rather than boring and monotonous, “people find them more appealing,” Lahnan says. “It is a well-known fact that they will feel more motivated to keep exercising if they are challenged and excited, rather than repeating same old moves over and over again.”
Another reason boot camps are such a hot trend is the social aspect of group exercise. “Clients tell me they enjoy boot camps not just for a terrific workout, but also because this setting offers opportunities for interacting and building personal relationships with others,” Lahnan points out. “Any way you look at it, boot camp workouts are a win-win situation.”
